UNION, N.J. (9/6/14) – The Kean University field hockey team combined with Stevens Institute of Technology for nine goals on Saturday, with the Cougars coming on the short end of the 5-4 final. Junior Marissa Robinson had two goals to lead Kean in the game.
The Cougars took the first six shots of the game, and Krista LaMaina was especially active around the crease in the first 10 minutes.
Stevens was buzzing around the cage for a long stretch of the first as well and ripped off five-straight shots in close succession, but the Kean defense stopped them all.
The Ducks did eventually earn a damaging penalty corner. 23 minutes into the game Dailyn Brook inserted the ball to Erin Silverstri, who one-timed the ball into the cage for the first goal of the game.
Three minutes later, Robinson (pictured left) single-handedly tied the game with her perseverance. She took two-straight shots off a penalty corner that were denied, but she still got to the rebound and shoved the ball past the defenders and over the goalline to knot the game.
Shortly thereafter, a Stevens turnover off a restart deep in the Ducks' zone gave Jordan Colna the ball on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Colna threaded a great pass to Krista LaMaina who put the ball into the open cage to give the Cougars their first lead of the day.
The second half featured a ton of scoring. First, Chelsea Mann got her own rebound, dribbled to the right, went around a defender and scored an unassisted goal to give Kean some breathing room. Just 20 seconds later, Kean was deep in Duck territory again and Robinson took a pass from Krista LaMaina about 10 yards out and walloped it into the back of the net for a 4-1 lead.
Unfortunately for Kean, Stevens scored four-straight goals in the final 30 minutes of the game to leapfrog the Cougars and take the lead. Three of those four came off of penalty corners. Stevens' point person for those – Dailyn Brook – finished the game with a goal and three assists. With a final goal with about 90 seconds to go, Stevens (1-2) hung on for its first victory of the season. Kean is now 3-1.
The field hockey program will now hit the road for three-straight games beginning at Vassar College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
