CSI Pulls Past Men's Basketball

Union, N.J. (1/19/15) – A second half surge sent the College of Staten Island men's basketball team past Kean University in non-conference action on Monday afternoon by the final of 70-58.

Junior Tommy Soulias led all players with a game-high 27 points, while Will Fonseca led the Dolphins (11-5) posting 23 points, including 18 in the final stanza.

It was a see-saw battle during the first 20 minutes, featuring four ties and eight lead changes.  Kean (3-13) posted their largest lead at the 15:46 mark on a Soulias (pictured left) layup (10-7) while CSI pushed the lead out to seven on free throws from Khari Rollock shortly before halftime.

At the break, Soulias provided 14 points while Mohamed Marie and Frank Schettino tallied eight each for the Dolphins.  The Cougars held leading scorer, Fonseca, who entered the game averaging just under 28 points per game, to five in the first 20 minutes of action.

Staten Island never lost the lead in the final period, but the Cougars came within three on two occasions thanks to treys from Soulias and Kevin Grek.  CSI pulled away in the final two minutes and pushed out to the first double-digit lead of the day on free throws.

Fonseca finished with a double-double 23 points and 11 boards while senior Tim Steward pulled down five rebounds and added nine points.

Kean returns to NJAC action on Wednesday when they travel to Montclair State University.
