Men's Soccer Knocks Off No. 5 Montclair State 3-0!

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (10/14/15) – The Kean University men's soccer program earned the biggest victory in recent memory with a 3-0 triumph over No. 5 Montclair State University on Wednesday night. The Red Hawks came into the game sporting a 13-1 record and a perfect 5-0 record in the NJAC. Both teams are now 13-2; Kean is 4-1 in the NJAC and the Red Hawks are now 5-1.

Freshman goalkeeper Chidi Iloka (pictured left) earned the shutout on Wednesday with five saves; it was the first time the Red Hawks had been shutout this season. He and the defensive line of Tim Dutchak, Payne Vazquez, Alex Noriega and Steven Osores held the high-powered Montclair offense scoreless on 14 shots.

The Red Hawks won the 2014 NJAC Championship and have played in the previous nine NCAA Tournaments, including Sectional Final appearances in three of the last four seasons.

Kevin Olaya scored the only goal of the first half when he converted a penalty kick at 29:15. Otherwise, the two sides were even: Kean led in shots 7-6, Montclair led the foul count by the same margin and MSU had taken just one more corner kick.

In the second half, the Red Hawks were desperate for the equalizer and outshot Kean 8-4. But the Cougars were able to parry the attacks and make their own scoring chances count.

Six minutes into the period, Olaya set up Kenny Rocha for Kean's second goal. In the 70th minute, Rocha helped spring Robert Barrera for the Cougars' third score of the night. The two tallies came on Kean's only two shots on goal in the half.

Kean held on for the stirring 3-0 victory despite being outshot 14-11 and out-corner kicked 4-2. Iloka is now the owner of a 10-1 personal record this season. Kean topped MSU for the first time since  a 2-1 overtime victory in 2004, snapping a 12-game losing streak to the Red Hawks. Kean won at MSU Soccer Park for the first time since 2001, and prior to Wednesday had not scored a goal against the Red Hawks since 2011.

The Cougars will return home on Saturday to take on NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark at 7 p.m. inside Kean Alumni Stadium.
