Red Hawks Edge Women's Soccer

Union, N. J. (10/14/15) – The Kean women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Montclair State University in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night.

The Cougars are now 8-5-1 on the season and 3-2-1 in the NJAC.

The Red Hawks (10-2-2, 3-1-2) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first half. Within the first 13 minutes of play, Shawna Grabowski scored from twenty yards out, over the goalkeeper into the upper right corner of the goal, assisted by Kendel Bernardini. Grabowski assisted the next goal, headed in by Martina Landeka in the 25th minute.

The Cougars did not close out the first half without a fight. Kean tried to keep the Red Hawks at bay, putting a team save in the book on the night from a shot off a corner. With seven minutes left in the half, KC Nunez made back-to-back saves off the Montclair attack.

A Red Hawks foul in the box with 13 minutes left in the match gave Deanna Columbia (pictured left) a penalty kick opportunity which she successfully translated into a goal to erase the shutout for the Cougars.

Despite outshooting MSU in the second half, the Red Hawks played out the clock by stalling in the corner to edge Kean for the win.

Nunez accumulated eight saves. The final shot count of the night was led by MSU, 16-7, including a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Kean will be back on the road on Saturday in a New Jersey Athletic Conference matchup against Rutgers-Newark at 7:30 p.m.
