Dover, Del. (10/17/15) - The #4 Wesley College football team downed Kean University 56-14 on Saturday afternoon at Drass Field in NJAC action.
Wesley compiled 541 yards of total offense and earned a total of 23 first downs to secure their sixth win of the season. Joe Callahan finished with 363 yards passing and five touchdowns, tying the program record with 100 career touchdown passes. Bryce Shade was on the receiving end of eight Callahan completions, going for 198 yards and three scores, including touchdown catches of 73 and 80 yards.
On defense, the Wolverines held Kean, who entered the game averaging 268.8 yards on the ground per contest, to just 104 yards rushing.
With 1:21 to play in the first half, Kean got on the scoreboard, capitalizing on a Wesley turnover and a costly penalty. The Cougars found the endzone on a 13-yard screen pass from Charles App to Kyree Tyson-Jones, making it 21-7 as the two teams entered halftime.
The Wolverines pulled away in the third quarter. On the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Leroy Cheatham picked off a Kean throw and returned it to the 11-yard line where the Wolverines punched it in to begin the rally. The Wesley offense rattled off 28 consecutive points, scoring on each of their first four offensive drives of the second half to increase their lead to 49-7.
On the final play of the third quarter, Wesley threw an interception in its own territory. Kean's Austin Davis read the quarterback and jumped a hitch route, picking off the pass and returning it 39 yards for the touchdown, making it 49-14. Austin finished with three picks on the day, tying a Kean single-game mark held by several other former Cougars.
Defensively, junior Robert Meade III (pictured left) led all players with 12 total tackles while adding one sack and two tackles for a loss. LeRon Dillard and Darin Hungerford both recorded 10 tackles apiece on the day.
On special teams, Vaughn Scott tallied seven kickoff returns for 140 yards on the afternoon.
Kean (4-2, 3-2 NJAC) return home to face Salisbury University in homecoming action on Saturday at 1 p.m.
