Camden, N.J. (10/3/15) – The Kean University women's soccer team scored on its first three shots of the game as the Cougars went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 4-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars improve to 6-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the NJAC, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 3-4-1 and 0-2-1.
Kean leads the all-time series, 14-2-3, has won five straight games against Rutgers-Camden and is 8-0-1 in the last nine.
The Scarlet Raptors started off strong and had a pair of shots by junior forward Catherine Fiore and a corner kick in the opening seven minutes. Kean, however, had a pair of corner kicks over the next two minutes and finally broke the scoreless deadlock at 11:44 when senior midfielder Angie Lopez (pictured left) headed home a chip into the box by sophomore back Kelly Williamson.
Only 1:03 later, the Cougars added another shot and another goal when freshman midfielder Brittany Birth notched her second career goal off a cross from the right side to the far post by her sister, junior midfielder Kayla Birth.
In the 21st minute, the Cougars collected their third shot and third goal on a perfect pass from the center of the box toward the left post by sophomore forward Kaitlyn Pallitto. It was finished at 20:36 by sophomore forward Emily Jurcsek for her sixth goal of the season.
Pallitto closed out the scoring at the 35:07 mark, heading in a corner kick to the far post by senior back Emily Martinelli. It was the team-leading ninth goal of the season for Pallitto, who also leads the Cougars with 20 points.
Kean finished with a 17-8 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Cougar senior goalie KC Nunez made four saves to earn the shutout, while Scarlet Raptor sophomore keeper Katie Gurba had seven saves.
Both teams return to action with non-conference road games on Wednesday. Rutgers-Camden plays at Eastern University at 4 p.m. Kean visits the College of Mount Saint Vincent for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
