New Britain, Conn. (11/20/15) – Junior Damian Corredor rushed for 156 yards to lead the Kean University football team to a 24-6 Eastern College Athletic Conference Presidents Bowl Championship over Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Friday night.
Corredor was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament as the Cougars (8-3) won their fourth ECAC Bowl Championship in program history, the first since 2009.
Quarterback Charles App finished with two touchdowns and nine completions for 136 yards.
The Cougars special teams stepped up on the first play of the game forcing a fumble on the opening kickoff as sophomore Robert Leavy recovered to give Kean possession right from the get-go. Kean's first scoring chance, a 28 yard field goal attempt, was blocked, leaving the game scoreless.
The Cougars got on the scoreboard first as Kean turned good field position into a 3-0 lead. After starting in home territory near midfield, Corredor provided a combined 25 yards on the ground with an 11 yard catch from rookie Tyler Hopman to bring Kean into the redzone. Aryeh Moslavi nailed a 27 yarder for the game's first points.
In the second quarter an interception by LeRon Dillard put the Cougars again in good field position in visitor territory. The drive was capped by an 18 yard reception from Matt Liparini for the game's first touchdown and a 10-0 Kean lead.
Kean headed into the break with a 17-0 lead after a 52 yard TD catch from senior Jonathan Schmitt gave the Cougars their second touchdown of the day. Junior Tom Winters ended the half with a 20 yard sack after the Engineers tried a fake field goal attempt.
Despite not scoring on the opening drive of the second half, punter Steve Ferlisi pinned WPI at their own two yard line.
David Coleman Jr. tallied the Cougars' third interception of the day, this one a pick six that put Kean's advantage to 24-0.
Defensively Stephan Lewis and Darin Hungerford combined for 25 tackles and two and a half tackles for a loss as the unit combined for 14 tackles for a loss and three interceptions.
