Orange, Calif. (3/17/15) - Chapman junior John Wiehe hit a walk-off RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Panthers a 7-6 win over Kean University on Tuesday night at Hart Park.
The win was Chapman's third in a row in the yearly meeting between the coast to coast teams and sixth in their past seven meetings, including two wins at the Division III national championships in 2011 and 2009.
It was a back and forth affair with the Panthers (12-6) scratching across a single run in the second before the Cougars (8-3) bounced back with a three spot in the third to take the lead. Junior Michael Kendall tied the game at one-all with an RBI double, scoring Ryan Kelley who reached on a walk. Later in the frame, senior Tom McGuckin lined a single through the left side, scoring two for the 3-1 advantage.
The Cougars appeared to add to their lead in the top of the seventh, but the play at the plate was ruled an out for the runner not swiping the plate according to the home plate umpire, ending the inning and the scoring chance.
Chapman tied the game with an RBI double by Joey Bernal in the seventh and took the lead in the eighth on a play that was not ruled in the Cougars favor with a ball down the rightfield line. The two RBI triple and RBI single staked the Panther lead at 6-3.
The Cougars rallied in their final at-bat, as Anthony Fischetti was hit-by-a-pitch to lead off the inning and pinch-hitter Matt Krupa reached on an infield error. Kendall worked a walk to load the bases. Scott Durkin and McGuckin both then worked back-to-back walks to inch within one at 6-5.
Sal Taormina was also hit-by-a-pitch in the inning, scoring Kendall to knot the game back up at six-all.
With two outs and runners in scoring position, Wiehe gave the Panthers the walk-off win with a single down the rightfield line.
McGuckin (pictured left) was 1-for-4 with three RBI while Durkin was 2-for-3.
Kean returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to University of LaVerne for the first of two games over the next two days.
