MAHWAH, N.J. (4/14/15) – The Kean University softball team played to a rare tie in game two of its NJAC doubleheader with Ramapo College on Tuesday. The Cougars and Roadrunners were knotted at four-all when the game was called due to darkness in the top of the eighth inning. Ramapo won the first contest of the afternoon 2-0.
The Roadrunners continue their surprising march through the NJAC standings and are currently 9-2-1 in the conference and 20-7-1 overall. With Tuesday's results Kean is now 17-7-1 and 7-4-1 in the NJAC.
In the second game draw, Ramapo scored first on a solo homerun by Nicole Mahoney in the bottom of the second inning.
But Kean scored twice in the top of the third– its first runs in 10 innings – on a 2-RBI triple by Emily Sabo. Tonianne DeMatteo and Brooke Ennis scored on the play to give the Cougars the lead.
Sabo started another rally in the fifth with a basehit, and Emily Bissonnette smacked a double to rightfield to put two runners in scoring position. Alexis D'Aloisio drove them both in with an RBI single down the leftfield line to make the score 4-1.
Ramapo was able to score three runs in the home half of the frame – two unearned – to tie the game. A passed ball and a pair of sacrifice flies brought in the three runs in the inning.
Cougar starter Stephanie Gilbert did not allow another Ramapo baserunner after that, but Paige Merle also kept Kean off the scoreboard the rest of the night as well. When darkness fell the game ended in a 4-4 tie.
DeMatteo (pictured left) finished game two 2-3 at the plate with a run scored.
In the first game, Kean starter Courtney Yard pitched well and allowed just one earned run while striking out four. But she was outdueled by Katrina Buczkowski, who earned the five-hit shutout. She struck out nine Cougars in the 2-0 battle between the NJAC rivals.
Kean will hit the road again on Wednesday with two road games at the College of Staten Island starting at 4 p.m.
