Ramapo Pulls Past Baseball, 5-3

Mahwah, N.J. (4/16/15) – Ramapo College used four early inning runs to hold up as the Roadrunners defeated the Kean University baseball team by the final of 5-3 on Thursday afternoon.

The loss snaps a five game win streak for the Cougars who are now 24-7 overall and 8-3 in the NJAC.  The win improves Ramapo's record to 18-10 and 7-4 in conference play.

Junior Matt Meleo got Kean on the board in the first as he worked a walk to start off the game.  He then moved to second and eventually third on wild pitches.  Fellow classmate Ryan Kelley then used a groundout to send him home for a quick 1-0 Kean lead.

Back-to-back one out hits, a Joe Venturino double and a Scott Peschiani single, tied things up and a double steal put Ramapo on top for good.  The Roadrunners recorded what would be the winning runs in the very next inning as Scott Shields lined a two RBI single up the middle to give Ramapo a 4-1 lead.

The Cougars chipped away and plated a single run in the fourth on an RBI single from rookie Matt Krupa.  Kean's best scoring chance came in the sixth inning as they loaded the bases with one out, but starter Mike Campbell got out of the jam with two strikeouts to end the threat.

Trailing 5-2 in the eighth, Krupa plated the final run of the day, a sacrifice fly, for the final.

Senior Charles Thielmann (4-2) suffered the complete game loss.  Thielmann allowed five runs and 10 hits with three strikeouts.

Campbell (3-2) earned the win for Ramapo.  Campbell struck out six in six innings of work.  He allowed two runs and seven hits.  Walker Larson picked up the save with one and two thirds shutout innings.

For the Cougars, senior Tom McGuckin was 3-for-3 while Krupa (pictured left) was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

The two teams will be back at it tomorrow at Jim Hynes Stadium beginning at 3:30 p.m.
