EWING, N.J. (4/18/15) – Senior Courtney Yard of the No. 24 Kean University softball team tossed her second-straight shutout in the Cougars' 3-0 game one victory over The College of New Jersey on Saturday. Yard retuned to the circle and nearly pulled off both wins, but the Lions prevailed 3-2 in the second with the help of an unearned run.
Yard was quite effective in the first game, with nine strikeouts and five scattered hits. She threw 121 pitches in the seven-inning complete game. In her previous start on Wednesday, she blanked the College of Staten Island.
In her best performance of the day, she pitched around three hits and left the bases loaded in the sixth inning, and struck out the final batter of the frame.
The Cougars took the lead early in the first game. Emily Sabo got the rally started with a walk, and Emily Bissonnette followed with a single to left. With two outs, freshman Katie Garbarino stroked a clutch 2-RBI single to the left-centerfield gap to make the score 2-0 after the first frame.
Kean scored once more in the fourth inning. Amanda Berezny (pictured left) led off with a single and Tonianne DeMatteo, Sabo and Bissonnette all had basehits in the frame as the Cougars tacked on one more run. Bissonnette was the only player on either side to have a multi-hit game.
When the second game began, the Cougars scored two more in the first inning with a two-out rally. Bissonnette walked and Alexis D'Aloisio singled. Yard then came through with a 2-RBI base knock to put Kean back on top right away.
But this time, TCNJ struck back with an unearned run to make the score 2-1 after one.
It took until the fifth inning for the Lions to finally get an earned run off of Yard. Steph Vuono walked and Bria Bartsch drove her in with a two-out hit to tie the score. One inning later, Deanna Utter provided the difference with a solo homerun to centerfield.
Katie Hourihan earned the win for TCNJ. She did not allow an earned run and struck out three. Yard pitched all 13 innings for the Cougars on Saturday and allowed a total of just eight hits while striking out 13.
The Cougars will close out their regular season with four home games next week. Up first in a Tuesday doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. against Stockton University.
