JERSEY CITY, N.J. (9/30/15) – The Kean University men's soccer team scored on three of its first five shots on its way to a 5-0 rout of New Jersey City University on Wednesday. The Cougars have won eight-straight games and are now 10-1 on the season. It was the team's sixth shutout of the year.
Kevin Olaya scored twice – his third and fourth of the year - to pace the offense and freshman Chidi Iloka made two saves in goal on his way to his third shutout of the season. Mateo Castro (pictured left) assisted the first two goals of the game.
Sev Kherlopian got the Cougars going with a marker at 10:32 that proved to be the game-winner, his NJAC-leading fourth GWG of the year. Olaya and Castro hooked up on a header seven minutes later to double the Kean lead.
Olaya got a setup pass from Timofei Kharisov for Kean's third goal. Olaya took possession and beat a Gothic Knight defender on the left side for the score.
In the second period, Kenny Rocha had a good effort to score an unassisted goal at 69:50 and then with less than three minutes remaining, Erick Reyes was set up by Brandon Gomez for the fifth and final Kean goal. It was the freshman Gomez's first collegiate point.
The Cougars wrapped up their opening month with a 10-1 record and 2-0 in the NJAC, while Jersey City fell to 1-9 and 0-3 in the league. Kean outshot the Knights 18-6 in the game.
Kean will be back in action at home on Saturday to take on Rutgers-Camden in another conference matchup at 4 p.m.
