Stockton Overtakes Women's Basketball

UNION, N.J. (1/16/16) – The Kean University women's basketball team suffered a 60-54 setback against Stockton University in NJAC action on Saturday. Marajiah Bacon scored 24 points for the Cougars to lead all scorers.

Kean used three first-quarter hits from behind the arc to take a 16-12 lead on the Ospreys, who came into the game sporting an 11-3 record and a 6-2 mark in the NJAC.

The Cougars lost the lead for a spell in the second period, but a trey by Jaquetta Owens put Kean ahead at 3:45 of the second. In the final minute of the first half, Owens went up for a layup on a fast break and finished despite a hard foul that sent her to the floor. That shot tied the game. The teams were still tied at 28 after the low-scoring first half.

Diana Todaro had a nifty move to open the second-half scoring for the Cougars, who outscored Stockton 13-9 in the period to take a four-point lead into the fourth.

Stockton scored the first four points of the final period to tie it up, and the contest remained tied with less than four minutes to go. Eden Obou broke the deadlock with a free throw, but Lea Mendolla came down to Stockton's next trip and hit a jumper in the lane.

On the next possession, Owens' free throw tied the game again with fewer than three minutes to go.

Next, Stockton's Najah Treadwell hit a layup to give SU the lead, and then Mendolla struck again with a long-range three to put the Ospreys up five with 1:25 to go. From there, the Ospreys (12-3, 7-2 NJAC) were able to fend off the Cougars and escape with the tough conference road victory.

Sasha Williams scored 18 points to lead the Ospreys. Both teams made exactly 21 field goals and pulled down exactly 48 rebounds. Stockton missed 15 of 30 free throws in the game.

Ruby Asabor racked up six blocks for the Cougars (9-7, 4-5 NJAC). Owens had eight assists to lead all players. Todaro finished with seven rebounds and nine points.

Kean will remain home next week to host Montclair State in NJAC play on Wednesday evening.
