WAYNE, N.J. (10/29/16) – With the final minutes ticking by in a nail-biting scoreless NJAC game, freshman Jenna Patrone set up sophomore Kayla Molnar for the game's only goal as the No. 18 Kean University field hockey team topped William Paterson University 1-0 on Saturday.
With the victory, the Cougars have wrapped up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming NJAC Tournament. Kean will travel to No. 2 seed Montclair State University on Wednesday in the NJAC semifinals.
Paterson, who dropped to 8-10 with the loss and 2-4 in the NJAC, played the 18th-ranked Cougars tough and actually outshot their guests 4-3 in the first half. But Erin Smith made four saves for Kean to keep the scoreboard blank.
In the second half, the Cougar defense did not allow a single shot, though the offense was having trouble generating threats themselves.
Finally, in the 57th minute Patrone (pictured left) set up Molnar, who fired a shot from five yards out to the left post that proved to be the only goal of the game.
Smith moved to 11-2 on the year and earned her fifth shutout of the season. This marked the second-straight 1-0 victory for the Cougars.
Kean ends the regular season with a 16-2 record and 4-2 in the NJAC conference.
