UNION, N.J. (11/9/16) – The No. 20 Kean University field hockey team dominated Manhattanville College in a 3-0 game in the opening round of the ECAC Tournament at home on Wednesday. With the victory, the Cougars tied the program record for most wins in a season with 17 this year.
Kean moved to 17-3 on the season, while Manhattanville sank to 11-8. Kean is the No. 2 seed in the region and the Valiants were No. 3.

Shauna LaMaina netted an unassisted goal less than five minutes into the game. The Cougars had earned a penalty corner, and Krista LaMaina inserted the ball to her sister. Shauna's first shot was blocked in front, but she pounced on the rebound and let loose a wicked shot just above the plywood for the game's first goal.
Late in the half, a hot shot by Katie-Lynne Lussier (pictured left) was stopped by a Valiant defender's foot on the goal line. Jenna Patrone stuck the ensuing penalty stroke into the twine for a 2-0 Kean lead.
Kean dominated the first half. The Cougars outshot Manhattanville 12-0 and took a total of seven penalty corners without allowing any.
At 54:33, Kayla Molnar grabbed a loose ball in front and got off a pretty backhanded shot to the top shelf for her fourth goal of the season. That gave Kean the final margin of victory; 3-0.
The finals shot totals were 22-1, and Kean took 14 penalty corners without conceding a single one. Meghan Hughes and Kaitlin Halloran combined for 10 Manhattanville saves, while Erin Smith earned her sixth shutout of the year without allowing a shot.
The Cougars will move on the ECAC Region 2 Championship hosted by No. 18 Alvernia University in Reading, Pennsylvania. Kean will take on FDU-Florham for the Region 2 title at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The winners of the two regions will square off on Sunday at noon for the ECAC Championship.
