Baseball Edges St. Joseph's-LI, 5-3

Patchogue, N.Y. (3/29/16) – The Kean University baseball team handed St. Joseph's College-Long Island a 5-3 defeat on Tuesday afternoon.

With the win the Cougars improve to 10-9 while the loss drops the Golden Eagles to 8-5.

Sal Taormina opened the scoring in the top of the first, when the designated hitter's double scored lead-off man Tyler Heisch. Taromina (pictured left) would score off an error with the next at-bat, and Matt Krupa would advance home on a sacrifice from Andy Lopez after to extend the Cougars lead to three runs (3-0).

In the top of the second, Kean shortstop Chris Amato advanced home on a wild pitch to put the Cougars up 4-0, and it wasn't until the bottom of the sixth that the Golden Eagles responded. With the bases loaded, second baseman Mike Griffo wired a double to right-center that cleared the bases and cut the hosts' deficit to just one run (4-3).

Ryan Reitmeyer would give Kean some cushion in the seventh, when his liner to left field scored Brian Cole.

Sophomore Frank Dente IV picked up the win.  Dente (1-0) tossed five and a third innings allowing three runs.  Rookie Tyler Hopman earned his first save with three innings of relief.  He allowed just one hit with three strikeouts.

Kean opens up NJAC play on Saturday when they host The College of New Jersey at 11:30 a.m.
