Eichlin Tosses Shutout for No. 16 Softball vs. Trine

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (3/6/16) – Junior pitcher Kiele Eichlin threw her second shutout in as many days as the Kean University softball team run-ruled Trine University 8-0 on Sunday. The Cougars fell to Coe College 7-2 in the day's opener.

Eichlin (pictured left) scattered six hits in six innings with two strikeouts against the Thunder in her second start of the day.

While Eichlin was working through Trine, Kean scratched a run across in the top of the second on an RBI groundout by Katie Garbarino, who plated Amanda Berezny.

In the third, Kean scored two unearned runs to increase its lead to 3-0. Emily Sabo and Olivia Zengel had hits in the inning for the Cougars.

The big damage came in the sixth: Garbarino walked and Emily Bissonnette and Sabo singled to start the rally for Kean. Pinch-hitter MacKenzie Valeriani then whacked a deep 2-RBI single to the left field wall to make the score 6-0.

Dana Knapp capped the Kean rally with a mammoth 2-run homerun to left field that gave the Cougars the magic eight-run run-rule cushion. Eichlin took care of business in the bottom of the sixth to give Kean with victory.

Game One

The Cougars - after being held scoreless for nine cumulative innings entering the day's action - broke though in the bottom of the third of the first game against Coe. Trailing 1-0, Sabo smashed a triple over the left fielder's head to put the tying run in scoring position with one out. Caroline Ratti and Knapp both earned walks to load the bases.

Coe's Mariah Fritz earned a strikeout for the second out, and put Berezny in an 0-2 hole to start her at-bat. But the veteran connected on the 0-2 offering to line an RBI single into left field, plating two runs and swinging the lead over to Kean.

In the next half-inning, Coe exploded for six runs – five of which were unearned – to snatch back the lead. Fritz kept the rest of the Ken hitters off-balance through the remainder of the game and earned the victory.

Kean pitching allowed just one earned run in the game. Shannon McMahon and Amanda Zeni pitched the final 3.1 innings without allowing a run for the Cougars. Sabo and Berezny had two hits apiece for the Cougar offense.

Kean is now 2-2, Trine is 0-2 on the year and Coe was 4-1 after the first game of the day.

The Cougars will enjoy a day off in Florida before returning to action on Tuesday against Westminster College and Marietta College beginning at 9 a.m.
