TCNJ Tops Softball on Senior Day

UNION, N.J. (4/23/16) – The College of New Jersey softball team took two tight games from Kean University, 3-2 and 2-0, in NJAC action on Saturday. Kean is now 15-19 on the year and 6-8 in the conference; the Lions improved to 22-13 and 9-5 in the league.

TCNJ pitchers Kaite Hourihan and Sam Platt both tossed complete games and did not allow an earned run all day in 14 combined innings. Platt struck out four and allowed two uneared runs in game one, while Hourihan allowed just two hits – both to Olivia Zengel (pictured left) – in her game two shutout.

Kean cut down two different runners at the plate in the second inning of game two to limit TCNJ to just one run in the frame. Dana Knapp and Emily Sabo combined on a cutoff from the wall in dead-centerfield for the first out and shortstop Samantha Krakower came home to get the third out of the inning. Catcher Kacie Worswick made both tags at the plate.

9-hitter Daniella Marino led TCNJ offensively, going 4-for-6 with two doubles and an RBI. Steph Vuono also had four hits for the Lions.

Kean left the bases loaded twice in game one and once more in game two. Cougar hurlers Shannon McMahon and Kiele Eichlin were effective and gave up just two earned runs each, but they were outdueled by Hourihan and Platt.

Though they have two more home games to play, Kean celebrated Senior Day for Tonianne DeMatteo and Tiffany Varriello in between games on Saturday.

The Cougars will play their final two home games of 2016 on Sunday in a non-conference doubleheader with DeSales University beginning at 1 p.m.
