GALLOWAY, N.J. (4/27/16) – Junior Dana Knapp launched her eighth homerun of the season to set a new school-record in the Kean University softball team's 7-2 victory over Stockton University on Tuesday. The Ospreys topped Kean 2-0 in the nightcap to salvage the split.
Knapp went 3-for-3 with a double and a two-run fourth inning dinger to set the new mark. That opposite-field shot made the score 4-0 after Kean had scored two unearned runs in the top of the third.
Kean starter Kiele Eichlin gave up back-to-back doubles to lead off the third inning but did not allow a run in the frame – a near-impossible occurrence. But she got a strikeout, a popup and a groundout to pitch out of the jam.
Stockton scored two runs in the fourth but that was all they would get off Eichlin. The junior struck out two and scattered nine hits in the win, her seventh of the season.
The Cougars added insurance in the fifth when MacKenzie Valeriani walked to start the frame and Knapp came through with a two-out RBI double to score pinch-runner Caroline Ratti.
Kean scored two more unearned runs in the seventh after Amanda Berezny started a two-out rally. Knapp walked and Tiffany Varriello and Emily Bissonnette both had two-out RBI basehits to make the final count 7-2.
Stockton starter Samantha Shockey, who was saddled with the game one loss, was brilliant in game two. She did not allow a Kean runner past second base and retired the first 12 batters of the game. Valeriani (pictured left) had the only two hits for Kean in the contest.
Kean's Shannon McMahon pitched well and allowed just two runs to the Ospreys, but they were enough as Stockton took game two 2-0.
Kean is now 18-20 overall and 7-9 in the NJAC. Stockton moved to 28-10 on the year and 11-5 in the league.
The Cougars will wrap up the 2016 regular season on Saturday at Montclair State University with two games beginning at 1 p.m.
