UTICA, N.Y. (9/11/16) – Twin juniors Krista LaMaina and Shauna LaMaina assisted each other on three of the Kean University field hockey team's four goals – including the overtime game-winner – in a 4-3 triumph over Utica College on Sunday.
Shauna assisted Krista on the Cougars' first two goals, which both tied the game after the Pioneers had taken leads of 1-0 in the first half and 2-1 in the second.
With the score tied at two with less than 10 minutes to go in regulation, Teresa Carr set up Raykena Brown for her first goal of the season that gave the Cougars their first lead of the day as Brown tipped Carr's shot in past the goalie.
But Utica came up with the equalizer, when Rylee Meelan earned a hat trick with her third gal of the day to knot the game at 3-3 and send the contest to overtime.
Early in the extra session, the Cougars were playing short-handed. All the same, they earned a penalty corner, their 15th of the night. Off the corner, Krista passed to Shauna at the top of the circle. Shuana shot right as one of UC's defenders was getting there. It hit off the defender's stick, went high up into the air over the goalie's head and landed in the back of the net to touch off the Kean celebration.
The Cougars moved to 5-0 on the season, while Utica fell to 0-4. Kean outshot the Pioneers 17-7 and owned a 15-4 advantage in corners. Freshman goaltender Bailee Mullen (pictured left) earned her first collegiate victory in a relief appearance over the game's final 32 minutes. She made two saves.
The field hockey team will remain on the road for a Wednesday night matchup at Delaware Valley College at 7 p.m.
