With 10 minutes to go in the first half, Phil Lopes had two good chances in close, perhaps the best Kean had managed to that point – but Old Westbury's Mike Warren was there for both saves.
Seven minutes later, after Kazari Trought's shot was saved by Warren, Kherlopian made an impressive run and came in the box with a flying header attempt on the rebound, but again Warren did just enough to send the ball wide.
Kean outshot its guests 15-2 in the opening period and the Cougar defense did not allow a similarly dangerous scoring chance on their end.
With 38 minutes to go, Kamsi Udodi took a threatening shot, but Warren made a fingertip save to keep the game scoreless. Warren finished with 14 saves, including a handful of draw-dropping stops.
After peppering the goal with 29 total shots in the game, Kean finally broke through in the 85th minute. The Cougars earned a corner and Mateo Castro Arias (pictured left) lined up to take it. Kherlopian made a run and headed the ball toward the far post and into the side-netting. It was his fifth goal of the year and third game-winner out of the team's six.
The Cougars outshot the Panthers 29-9 in the game and had eight corner kicks – including the fateful one – to Old Westbury's two. Warren's play single-handedly kept the game from becoming a blowout.
Watkins made three saves and was solid throughout the night.
The men's soccer team is now 6-1 and will kick off NJAC play on Saturday by hosting Stockton University at 1 p.m.
