Union, N.J. (10/14/17) – Erick Reyes gave the Kean University men's soccer team a come-from-behind overtime 2-1 win over Rutgers University-Camden in a thriller on Saturday afternoon.
After just three minutes into overtime, Antoine Gbamou sent a cross towards Reyes who was making a run up the middle of the field. Reyes met the ball in the box and scored his second one-timer goal of the day, leading to a dog-pile on the field and a 2-1 victory for the Cougars.
Rutgers-Camden got the action started after 20 minutes of play in the first half. A Cougar foul set up the Scarlet Raptors (6-7-3, 2-4-1 NJAC) with a free kick about 30 yards out. Vincenzo Masitti sent the cross into the box. After a deflection, Darnell Brown found the ball at his feet and sent a shot past the keeper and into the bottom left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Cougars (8-5-1, 3-4-0) made a push with two minutes remaining in the half. Freshman Russell Hoffer sent a long pass up field to Vinceroy Nelson who was making a run up the left sideline. After a few touches, Nelson sent a pass into the box that found Reyes who sent the one-timer to the back of the net. The half ended with the score tied at one.
Neither team was able to put a score on the board in the second half. Although both teams were held scoreless, there was still plenty of action as things got chippy between players, leading to a total of seven cards.
Keeper Derek Phells made four saves in the victory.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday night as they take on nationally ranked Drew University at 7:30 p.m.
