Camden, N.J. (4/29/17) – The Kean University softball team swept Rutgers-Camden to close out the NJAC regular season by finals of 3-2 and 5-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars stand with a 29-7 overall mark and finish 12-6 in the conference, good for third place. Kean will now face Rowan University, the fourth seed, on Tuesday at Cougar Field at 4 p.m. This will be the fourth time in the last five seasons that the Cougars and Profs have squared off in the tournament opener.
In today's win, senior Emily Sabo kept adding her name to the Kean record book posting new career marks for runs scored and walks. Sabo currently has 138 runs, besting Megan Cegielski's 136 and 72 walks, surpassing Courtney Yard's 69.
Game One
Trailing 1-0 heading into the third, the Cougars used a two out rally that started with Caroline Ratti who singled and stole second. Sabo would walk (breaking the record) and Cayleen Rizo would single home Ratti to knot the game at one. Senior Dana Knapp gave Kean the lead for good with an RBI single of her own and sophomore Jacqueline Riley added insurance with an RBI hit for a 3-1 lead.
Shannon McMahon worked into and out of trouble in the fourth as the Scarlet Raptors (13-23, 5-13 NJAC) pushed one across and stranded the tying runner at third.
McMahon (18-2) allowed just one earned run in the complete game effort.
Game Two
Tied 1-1 heading into the sixth the Cougars took the lead for good as Riley singled to start the frame. Pinch-runner Tatiana Yourstone worked her way around the bases with a sacrifice and a single and she would cross the plate on a bunt single from pinch-hitter Sara Vocisano.
The Cougars put the game out of reach in their last at-bat as Sabo got things going with a leadoff. She would swipe second and move to third on a sacrifice before scoring on a Riley RBI single. Olivia Zengel and Taryn DiGiacomo would also add RBI with a single and a bases loaded walk for what would be the final.
DiGiacomo (11-5) picked up the complete game win and allowed just four hits and two walks.
Sabo, Ratti and Amanda Berezny each had two hits in the nightcap.
