Union, N.J. (9/27/17) - The Kean University women's soccer team fell to Montclair State University by the final of 2-1 in an overtime thriller on Wednesday night.
The Cougars got off to an early lead as Kendall Machak soared through the air to send a diving header to the back of the net.
Junior Sabrina Sirni carried the ball up the right sideline and sent a perfectly placed cross to the six yard line. Timing her run just right, Machak then dove forward for the cross and headed the ball into the right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The score remained that way until MSU (5-3-2, 3-0 NJAC) was set up with a corner kick with 5:46 remaining in the game. Melanie Cunha sent the cross into the box to the feet of Christine Mayorga who tied the score with a one-time shot past the keeper.
With 2:32 remaining in overtime, Mayorga found the ball at her feet after a nice volley into the box from Maddy McLelland. Mayorga then buried her second goal of the night, this time for the win.
With this loss, Kean drops to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the NJAC.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday as they travel to Rowan University for a 1 p.m. start.
