UNION, N.J. (10/26/18)- Jenna Patrone tied a school record and tallied a new career-high with four goals as the Kean University field hockey team closed the 2018 season with a 5-3 defeat of William Paterson University on Friday evening.
Erin Donnelly collected three assists for the Cougars who finish the season at 9-10 and 2-4 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Abigail Viola scored a goal and tallied five shots for the Pioneers who fall to 7-11 overall and 1-5 in the NJAC.
Patrone scored two goals within the first 10 minutes as she tallied a goal from Donnelly, off a pass at the top of the circle, and a goal from Rachel Mills that was inserted off a corner. Kean held the early 2-0 advantage.
After WPU made it 2-1 just before halftime, Patrone answered with back-to-back identical goals coming off assists from Donnelly and Mills. The Cougars notched an insurance goal in the 57th minute when Donnelly connected with Mills for the 5-1 advantage.
The Pioneers responded with two late goals in the final five minutes, but couldn't catch the Cougars.
Kean edged William Paterson on shots (21-16) and corners (14-12). Patrone finished with 14 shots; including seven on goal while Donnelly, Mills, and Melissa Way all tallied two shots apiece. Bailee Mullen improved to 3-0 with four saves in 60:23 of work in the cage.
Patrone tied the school record for goals in a single game, which is currently held by six different Cougars and was last set by Korri Thompson in the 8-2 victory over Roanoke College on Sept. 21, 2013. In that game, Thompson scored four goals and handed out two assists.
Thompson shared the field that day with current Cougar graduate assistant Julie Knodt.
