No. 11 Cougars Tie Longest Winning Streak with Comeback Victory over SUNY New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (10/15/19) – Melissa Way notched a goal and an assist as the No. 11 Kean University field hockey team tied the program's longest winning streak at 15 games with a 3-1 comeback victory over SUNY New Paltz on Tuesday afternoon.

Peyton Mann and Lia DiPiazza scored for the No. 11 Cougars who improve to 15-1 overall. Jamie Wagner scored for the Hawks who fall to 8-5 overall.

After surrendering their first lead since the opening loss to Salisbury, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. Kean responded with two goals before halftime, including Way connecting with Mann in the 12th minute and Erin Donnelly finding DiPiazza in the 27th for the 2-1 halftime advantage.

The Cougars put some breathing room between them and New Paltz as Way recorded her 20th goal of the season with a score in the 58th minute.

The Hawks edged the Cougars on shots (17-12) and penalty corners (8-4).  Way recorded a team-high four shots, while Mann tallied three and Jenna Patrone totaled two. Belly Reynoso improved to 15-1 in goal with six saves in 60 minutes of work.

In addition, Taylor Hutchins tallied two defensive saves, while Rachel Mills and Laura Stump recorded one apiece.

Kean ties the longest winning streak set by the 2017 squad, which opened that season at 15-0 and concluded with a 21-3 record.

Also, Way becomes the sixth player in program history to score at least 20 goals in a season, joining Brittany Gibbs, Krista LaMaina, Olivia Triano, Teresa Carr and Patrice DiFabio.

Reynoso also needs two goalie victories and three shutouts to set single season marks in both categories.

Head Coach Leslie LaFronz and the Cougars will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 19th, hosting the Giants of Keystone College at 1:00 p.m.
