Late Surge Sends Women's Hoops Past Brooklyn

Union, N.J. (11/22/19) – Senior Payce Lange dropped in a career-high 31 points as the Kean University women's basketball team used a late rally to pull past Brooklyn College by the final of 79-68 on Friday evening.

Lange added seven rebounds on the night as she scored 19 points in the second half surge.

Brooklyn (3-2) led or was tied for the entire first half and pushed the advantage out to as many as 14 with less than a second in the second quarter on two made points by Sarah James from the charity stripe.  Teammate Chanel Jemmott already picked up a double-double in the first 20 minutes with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Kean (2-1) turned things around in the second half, first with an strong shooting third quarter (62.5%) and then in the final 10 minutes with an 8-0 run to start the quarter to knot things up at 61-all.  A fastbreak layup and one from Shannon McCoy gave the Cougars their first lead of the day (64-63) with just under six minutes to go in the contest.

From there the Cougars didn't let that advantage go, pushing the lead out to double digits on two occasions as Kean held the Bulldogs to just seven points in the last stanza.

In total, 50 combined fouls were called in the contest as Kean registered 23 points off free throws.

For the Cougars, McCoy registered 16 points while Cindy Foresta brought down nine rebounds.

For Brooklyn, Jemmott, James and Lauryn Clarke-Cornette all finished with double-digit points with 16, 15 and 11 respectively.

Kean opens New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to New Jersey City University for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
