Dover, Del. (11/9/19) – #12/13 Wesley College used two scores in the second half to pull away from the Kean University football team on Saturday afternoon in NJAC action by the final of 27-13.
Tyrae Taylor completed 16-of-30 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown. Donte Jamison registered three catches for 47 total yards, including a six yard touchdown strike in the second quarter that put the Cougars (3-6, 2-4 NJAC) ahead, 13-12 at the break. Jamison also added three kickoff returns totaling 70 yards, including a 35 yard return on the opening kickoff.
The Kean defense was the first to put points on the board as Kyeon Taylor intercepted Jon Mullin's pass for a 33 yard pick-six. The Cougar extra point attempt was blocked, putting the score at 6-0 early.
The Cougars thwarted the Wolverines from scoring on the next drive as Peter Lejawa forced and recovered a fumble near the goal line. Unfortunately for Kean they were unable to push the drive out of the endzone and Wesley capitalized with a safety.
The Kean defense held early in the second quarter, forcing Wesley into a field goal in the redzone to hold a slim one point lead (6-5). The Wolverines then took their first lead of the day midway through the quarter on a six play, 41 yard drive that ended with a 16 yard reception from David Marrocco to Corterris Simpson for a 12-6 lead.
The Cougars regained the lead with time expiring in the period as T. Taylor found Jamison for the six yard strike, capping a 10 play, 53 yard drive.
Wesley took the lead for good in the third quarter with a 15 play, 87 yard drive that took six minutes. Marcellus Pack used six rushing attempts on the drive and sealed the win with a six yard scamper with less than a minute to go in the third quarter. The Wolverines went for two and succeeded to keep the advantage at a touchdown.
The Wolverine defense came up with a key interception late in the fourth quarter that set up their final score of the day to seal the victory.
Dante Capozzoli had a game-high 12 tackles along with an interception. Dietrich Trumbauer added 10 tackles with one for a loss and a breakup.
Pack finished with 170 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the afternoon for Wesley.
Kean closes out the 2019 season on Saturday when they travel to Montclair State University to take on the Red Hawks.
