Colby Downs Cougars in High Scoring Affair

UNION, N.J. (12/1/19) – Jeff Cooper and Jailen Jamison both poured in 21 points apiece as the Kean University men's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest to Colby College, 106-102 on Sunday afternoon.

Sam Jefferson finished with 31 points, connected on five triples and went a perfect 10-for-10 at the line for the Mules who remain unbeaten at 7-0 overall. Nate Lyles totaled 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists for the Cougars who fall to 1-5 overall.

The opening stanza saw Colby make 13 triples and hold no larger than a 10-point advantage at any point. Kean stayed within striking distance as Jaedan Sheehan knocked down a three pointer and Lyles made a layup all in the final minute for a 53-48 halftime deficit.

The shootout continued into the second half as both squads maintained their 50.0% shooting from the floor and their 45.0% shooting from downtown. The Mules attempted to pull away with a 20-8 run that gave them their largest lead of the game at 85-68 with 9:34 to play. The Cougars responded with an 18-7 run over the next 4:01 to trail by just three at 89-86 with 5:35 remaining.

The final five minutes saw Kean outscore Colby 19-17, which included Jamison scoring seven of his 17 second half points. The Cougars were able to cut the Mules lead down to just two points at 104-102 with 14 seconds remaining, but Jefferson powered Colby with 12 of his 18 second half points in the final minutes. The senior went 6-for-6 from the line and connected on the two free throws to ice the contest with 10 seconds remaining.

Jamsion added eight rebounds and six assists, while Jared Latane totaled 11 points and Jah'Mir Miller tallied eight points and seven assists.

Head Coach Adam Hutchinson and the Cougars will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 4th, hosting the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark at 8:00 p.m.
