Softball Opens Spring Games with Two Victories

Kissimmee, Fla. (3/9/19) - The Kean University softball team recorded two victories on the opening day of the Spring Games in Kissimmee with victories over Webster University and Washington (Mo.) University.

Game 1: Kean 13, Webster 0 (6 Inn.)

Jacqueline Riley tossed a one-hit shutout with two strikeouts as the Cougars (5-1) held the Gorloks (1-5) of Webster University from Missouri scoreless in the opening contest.

Riley was solid at the dish as well, going 3-for-4 with five RBI's, a run scored and a double. Kean amassed 13 runs on 12 hits while tallying 10 RBI's in the process.

Caroline Ratti finished 2-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored, while Olivia Zengel went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the victory.

Julie Raba, Cayleen Rizo, Sarah Zengel, Tatiana Yourstone, and Maria Bonfanti each tallied a hit for the Cougars.

Webster's lone hit off Riley came as a clean line drive single between shortstop and third during an 0-2 count in the bottom of the fourth.

Riley currently remains unbeaten (3-0) in the circle this season.

Game 2: Kean 6, Washington (Mo.) 4

S. Zengel went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a run scored, while O. Zengel finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as the Cougars (6-1) fended off a late rally by the Bears (1-1) of Washington University from St. Louis.

Kean scored six unanswered runs over the first four innings for a 6-0 lead on RBI's by S. Zengel, Ratti, O. Zengel, Rizo and Gabriella Fredette.  Washington would respond with four runs in the final two innings and trailed 6-4 in the seventh before the Cougars secured the final out.

Taryn DiGiacomo recorded six strikeouts and improved to 3-1 in the circle.

Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action at the Spring Games, tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 10th, against Husson University at 12:00 p.m. and Thomas More University at 2:30 p.m.
