UNION, N.J. (5/12/19) – Olivia Zengel finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and was named to the All-Tournament team as the #13 Kean University softball team fell in the Union, N.J. regional final to #11 Christopher Newport University, 6-4 on Sunday evening.
Patty Maye Ohanian, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Captains who improve to 36-7 overall and advance to next week's super regional against either Arcadia or Mount Aloysius at a site to be determined. Jacqueline Riley, Sarah Zengel and Cayleen Rizo all finished 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Cougars who finish their season with a program record 39-8 overall record.
CNU scored five runs in the first inning and put Kean into a 5-0 deficit, which proved to be tough to overcome in the long run. Kean finally crossed the plate in the fourth, when Erin Hollyfield pinch hit and earned an RBI bases loaded walk to score pinch runner Grace Cofino. The Captains increased their lead to 6-1 before Kean tallied two runs in the fifth on back-to-back RBI groundouts by S. Zengel and Rizo.
Rizo's RBI moved her into first place all-time on the career list with 124.
Riley added another run in the seventh on an RBI groundout, but the Cougars never crossed the dish again before the final out was made. O. Zengel was joined on the All-Tournament team by Caroline Ratti and Taryn DiGiacomo.
