Baseball Bows Out of NCAA Tournament

Union, N.J. (5/19/19) – The Kean University baseball team was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament in Sunday action as Shenandoah University came back to win two games by the final of 6-4 and 4-1.

Game 1 – Shenandoah 6, Kean 4

The Cougars got the ball rolling with single runs in the first three innings to take a 3-1 lead.  The Hornets closed to within one in their half of the fourth before Kean responded with one again in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 4-2 lead.

Shenandoah used three walks to load the bases with one out in the top of the eighth.  Another walk inched them to within one and a groundout later in the inning tied things up at four-all.

Both teams battled to extra innings where the Hornets took advantage of a fielding miscue by the Cougars to extend the inning.  Frankie Ritter put SU ahead with a double down the line and Robert Marcelle added insurance with a single through the left side.

Kean had two runners aboard with one out in the bottom of the 10th, but a double play ended the threat and the game.

Zachary Marzano was 2-for-5 with an RBI while Brian Cole was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Game 2 – Shenandoah 4, Kean 1

It was Kean again who scored first in the winner-take-all championship.  Cole ripped a one out, RBI single in the top of the second for a quick 1-0 lead. The Hornets answered right back in the bottom of the third as Grant Thompson homered to right to lead off the inning.

The score would remain that way until Shenandoah broke through with three runs in the sixth.  Keegan Woolford doubled with one out for what would be the game-winning RBI and Jamie Naill and Thompson followed with RBI singles for insurance.

Marzano was 2-for-3 while John Carello was 2-for-2.
