Union, N.J. (9/6/19) – Delaware Valley University jumped out to a 16-0 after the first quarter and didn't look back as they picked up their first win of the season by defeating Kean University by the final of 37-7 on Friday night in the season opener for both.
Anthony Fontana was 6-for-8 for 205 passing yards and three touchdowns along with 90 rushing yards and one TD on the ground to lead the Aggies.
Myles Toppin collected 102 receiving yards on seven catches for the Cougars.
The Kean defensive unit passed the test on the first possession as DelVal set up first and goal at the five yard line. The Cougars stuffed the box and forced a change of possession on downs. On the second play of their first offensive series Michael Nobile (6.5 tackles for a loss on the night) found Jessey Asare in the endzone for what would be a safety and the game's first points.
On the first play of their next drive, Fontana found an open Nate Pauls for 50 yards and a touchdown.
It was Fontana again on their next possession who connected with Dan Allen for a 22 yard strike and a 16-0 lead after one quarter of play.
The Aggies scored late in the second quarter as a Justin Harris interception and subsequent return of 44 yards set up DelVal in the red zone. One play later Fontana kept the ball himself for a 23-0 lead at the break.
Trailing 37-0 in the fourth quarter, Kean erased the shutout as Kory Kenny intercepted a pass deep in Aggie territory setting up the Cougars at the 14 yard line. Tyrae Taylor connected with Donte Jamison and he fell short by inches for a touchdown. Asare plunged through two plays later for the score.
For the Cougars, Dante Capozzoli led all players with 11 tackles on the night, while Peter Lejawa added seven and a hurry.
Kean returns to action on Saturday, September 14th when they travel to Springfield College.
