Wayne, N.J. (1/11/20) – The Kean University women's basketball team saw their six game NJAC winning streak end as host William Paterson University defeated the Cougars, 67-65.
Sophomore Shannon McCoy led all players with 27 points on the afternoon as Kean falls to 10-4 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Madison Dulude had a team-high 26 points for the Pioneers who improve to 6-7 and 5-2 in the NJAC.
It was a battle from the get go, as neither team was able to push ahead for a comfortable lead in the first quarter. The Pioneers found some space late in the second quarter with a 10-1 run, backed by two treys, to break a 26-all deadlock. A three-point play from Brianna Brooks with just over a minute on the clock in the quarter pushed the WP lead into double-digits for the first time for either team in the contest. The Pioneers were able to hold on to that advantage going into the break (41-31).
Coming off halftime each team added 17 points in the third quarter which left the Cougars facing the same 10 point deficit going into the final stanza. Kean came out strong and dwindled the deficit to just three points (60-57) with just under seven minutes to go. Kean was held scoreless over the next three minutes, but the Pioneers were only able to one point in the same stretch, giving them life late. A bucket from behind-the-arc with 1:55 on the clock from McCoy closed the gap to just one point, but turnovers and fouls plagued Kean late as William Paterson was able to hold on down the stretch.
Payce Lange finished with 11 points and Cindy Foresta added eight points and 10 rebounds.
Kean returns home to face first-place Rowan University on Wendesday.
