Union, N.J. (2/18/20) – Drew University used efficient pitching and timely hitting to defeat the Kean University baseball team by the final of 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon.
Jeff Serin (1-0) earned the win after pitching five shutout innings allowing just one hit with three walks and nine strikeouts. Teddy Hoxie earned his second save in as many games after entering the ninth with the bases loaded and two outs. After allowing a hit which erased the shutout, he got a groundout to end the threat.
Drew (2-0) got all the runs they would need in the top of the first. Max Felsenstein walked on a full count to start things off and Matthew Lange singled to left center to put the first two runners aboard. A groundout moved both into scoring position and Jon Cocchio delivered a 1-2 pitch down the line, driving in both.
Starter Frank LoGiudice (0-1) settled down from there and didn't allow another run until the sixth. A leadoff single to start the frame ended his start and Cole Bosch was later able to score on a fielder's choice to account for all of the Rangers runs.
Kean (2-1) rallied in the ninth as LoGiudice started things off with a single. Later with two outs, the Cougars loaded the bases with back-to-back walks to Chris Vetter and Brandon Johannessen. Hoxie entered and Michael Lapczynski singled through the side to erase the shutout.
Cocchio and Ryan Nagle each had two hits for Drew.
The Cougars return to action on Friday when they host the College at Old Westbury at 3 p.m.
