Union, N.J. (11/13/21) – Donte Jamison ran for 167 yards and two touchdowns as the Kean University football finished the 2021 season with a 15-7 win over visiting Montclair State University on Saturday afternoon.
With a 4-2 NJAC record, the Cougars finish second in the NJAC this season.
On senior day, and in a crazy weather plagued afternoon, Kean used two timely scores to walk away with the win, their first over MSU (3-7, 2-4 NJAC) since 2016.
On the second play of the day, Kyeon Taylor quickly thwarted an early Red Hawk threat with an interception at the nine yard line. Neither team was able to get things going offensively when Mother Nature chimed in with a thunderstorm that delayed action for roughly an hour.
Kean broke through on the first play of the second quarter as Jamison turned a fourth and two into a touchdown, breaking free down the left side. The ensuing extra point was blocked, leaving the score at 6-0.
The Cougars added to their lead on the second play of the third quarter as Jamison charged across the field, sprinting 73 yards down the right side of the field. With the successful extra point, Kean now stood with a 13-0 lead.
Later in the quarter, Nick Firth put his second punt of the day inside the 20, this time at the nine yard line to set up what would lead to extra points for the Cougars. Faced with a fourth-and-nine at their own 10 yard line, MSU picked up back-to-back penalties pushing them to the two and a half yard line. An errant snap out of the endzone, gave Kean two points for a safety and a 15-0 lead.
The Red Hawks appeared to be gaining momentum and looked to the endzone with Ja'Quill Burch's pass, but Taylor came up with it again for the second time on the day, this time at the one yard line.
On their last possession of the day MSU got on the board with a 13 play, 72 yard drive. Faced with a fourth-and-four at the Kean 23 yard line, Burch's jump ball in the endzone found Jamie Hamilton who reached over a Kean defender to erase the shutout.
Defensively Donte Capozzoli finished with six tackles, four for a loss, with a sack and three quarterback hurries. Taylor added five tackles, with four solo stops.
For MSU, Mike Ramos led all players with 13 total tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.
