UNION, N.J. (12/1/21) – Three starters scored in double figures as the Kean University men's basketball team had their six game-winning streak snapped by Rutgers-Newark in a 82-64 loss on Wednesday evening.
Dante Ralph totaled 17 points and seven rebounds for the Scarlet Raiders who improve to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Patrick Strzala finished with 17 points for the Cougars who fall to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in the NJAC.
The opening minutes were a back and forth affair with the Cougars holding a slim 16-11 advantage. Newark stuck around with their hot shooting (64.2%) and closed out the half on a 25-6 run to take a 45-30 lead into halftime.
The second half saw Newark continue their hot shooting (57.8%) and hold Kean to a double digit deficit. The Cougars did cut the lead down to 11 at 49-38, but the Scarlet Raiders extended their lead back to the largest of the game at 65-44 with 12 minute remaining.
Kean would get some points back before the final whistle, cutting the deficit down to 74-62 with 5:21 remaining.
Letrell West and
JD Daniels both tallied 11 points apiece, while
Jailen Jamison finished with nine points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.
