Baseball Splits with William Paterson in Non-Conference Action

Union, N.J. (3/13/21) – The Kean University baseball team split action with William Paterson University on Saturday in non-conference action as the #12 Cougars won the opener 4-3 and lost the nightcap 5-1.

Game One – Kean 4, WP 3

The Cougars (3-1) got two big hits in the second frame to jump out to a 3-0 lead.  Catcher Phil Marcantonio launched the first homerun outside of the park this season, this a two run shot, for a 2-0 advantage.  Philip Mahlik followed with an RBI triple for the quick 3-0 lead.

The Pioneers (2-1) pulled within one in the fourth as Steve Yelin registered an RBI double and Dylan Habeeb followed with an RBI single to center.  William Paterson knotted the game up in their half of the fifth with an RBI fielder's choice from Matt Ferrara.  Kean scored what would be the winning run on the bottom of the same inning as Conner DeForge led things off with a single.  He moved up two bases with wild pitches and came around to score on a sac fly off the bat of Frank LoGiudice.

Graduate student Kevin Stewart picked up the win after tossing six innings, allowing three runs on five hits.  He fanned six and walked one. Graduate student Frank Dente IV recorded the save after tossing two innings of scoreless, hitless ball.

Game Two – WP 5, Kean 1

Though the final score doesn't reflect it, the nightcap was a nail biter, with the two teams locked in a 2-1 game for most of the contest.  The Pioneers struck first as Ferrara laced a two run double into the cap in the top of the third for a 2-0 lead.  The Cougars cut the deficit in half with a single from Michael Medvetz in the bottom of the fourth.

The score would remain that way until the ninth when Yelin doubled to left, driving in two for extra insurance.  Caleb Weis added one more with a single to left center for what would be the final.

Jack DeFouw earned the win for WP after tossing six innings allowing six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  Darmany Rivas earned the save after tossing two innings of scoreless ball.

Kean returns to action on Thursday when they host Rutgers-Camden at 3:30 p.m.
