Newark, N.J. (3/5/21) – Senior Casey Filiault led all players with 22 points as the Kean University women's basketball team defeated Rutgers-Newark for the third straight game, this time by the final of 74-44.
In the opening round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament top seeded Montclair State University easily dispatched Rutgers-Camden. The #5 Cougars will now face MSU in the semifinals on Friday, March 12th at 5 p.m.
After falling behind 2-0, Kean quickly tied things up with a fastbreak layup from Filiault. The Cougars took the lead for good in their next possession as Shannon McCoy hit one from behind the arc for a 5-2 lead. The Cougars led by as many as 21 on two occasions in the next period and took a 34-13 lead at the break.
The Cougars cruised the rest of the way as 16 players saw action in the contest. McCoy finished with 12 points while Shahd Badeer collected a double-double 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks off the bench.
Samiyah Horton had 18 points for Rutgers-Newark in the loss.
