Union, N.J. (4/24/21) – The Kean University baseball team split with Rutgers-Camden on Saturday in New Jersey Athletic Conference action.
Game One – Kean 13, Rutgers-Camden 5
The Scarlet Raptors (8-12, 7-7 NJAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second as Garrett Warner lofted a sacrifice fly and Danny Vazquez doubled down the line.
The Cougars (13-10, 8-6 NJAC) got one back in the bottom of the same inning off a Rutgers-Camden miscue (one of six in the opener). A two-run blast from Matt Yanick pushed the score to 4-1 in the top of the third.
The see-saw battle continued and Kean took the lead for good in the sixth as Chris Ciaccio and Conner DeForge each recorded single RBI. Leading 6-4, the Cougars then exploded for seven runs on six hits during their half of the seventh. Highlighting the inning were doubles from Josh Jackson (RBI) and Christian Pellone (two RBI).
Collin Kiernan (3-2) earned the win after tossing seven innings allowing four runs and four hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
Offensively Kyle Harrington was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a triple and an RBI.
Game Two – Rutgers-Camden 5, Kean 4
The Scarlet Raptors rallied from a 4-0 deficit to edge Kean in the nightcap.
The Cougars plated three in the first inning as Zachary Marzano collected an RBI fielder's choice and Harrington added two more with a single. Ciaccio's double in the third inning made it 4-0.
The Scarlet Raptors chipped away and added two in the fifth as Jack Murphy doubled down the line. Yanick crossed the plate on a miscue in the seventh to inch closer and Auggie Uzdanovics tied things up in the same inning with a sacrifice fly.
Brett Yurgin delivered the go-ahead and winning run with a double down the line in the eighth.
Dylan Wichrowski (1-0) earned the win after tossing seven innings allowing three earned runs and eight hits. Nick Listro picked up his second save of the year with two flawless innings.
Kean returns to action on Thursday when they travel to New Jersey City University for the final week of regular season play.
