Men’s Lacrosse Secures Second Seed in CSAC Tournament with Decisive Victory over Montclair State on Senior Night

UNION, N.J. (4/28/21) – Brady Moore and Dean Gillette combined for eight points as the Kean University men's lacrosse team secured the second seed in the upcoming Colonial States Athletic Conference tournament with a decisive 14-2 victory over Montclair State on Senior Night.

Moore finished with four points on three goals and one assist for the Cougars who finish their regular season at 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the CSAC.  Joe Covino and Robert Brennen each notched a goal for the Red Hawks who finish their regular season at 7-4 overall and 4-2 in the CSAC.

Kean struck first with a goal late in the first quarter as Tommy Pellegrino scored on an Alex Hufford assisted goal for the 1-0 lead entering the second quarter.

After both sides opened the second quarter with a score, Kean closed the half with six unanswered for an 8-1 halftime lead. Moore scored two and assisted on one, while Hufford, George Capria, Matt Palmieri and Dante Magliano all notched a goal.

The Cougars added four more goals in the third with scores by Dean Gillette, Connor Batjer, Moore and Matthew Schwartz for an 12-1 advantage entering the fourth.

In the fourth, Kean capped their scoring for the evening with goals by Michael Shapiro and Steven Thorne. Shapiro's goal highlighted the evening as the senior was playing tonight for his late father Alan, who passed away unexpectedly yesterday.

On faceoffs, Max Stevens went 7-for-11 with three groundballs.

On defense, Matt Palmieri totaled seven groundballs and a caused turnover, while Matt Tanis totaled five groundballs and five caused turnovers. Gregory Castor finished with three groundballs and a caused turnover, while Jonathan Duffy totaled two groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Before the contest, Head Coach Shelley Sheiner and his staff honored seniors Dylan Pelago, Justin Regester, Capria, Duffy, Shapiro, Schwartz, Tanis and Palmieri.

Coach Sheiner and the Cougars will return to action on Saturday, May 1st, hosting the third seeded Red Hawks of Montclair State University in the CSAC semifinals. The start time is to be announced.
