Union, N.J. (4/3/21) – The Kean University women's soccer team advanced in the New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament via penalty kicks (4-3) over New Jersey City University after a scoreless draw in regulation and overtime.
The sixth seeded Cougars (0-3-2) will now travel to #3 Stockton for a quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday.
Kean's best scoring opportunity in regulation came near the end of the first half as the Cougars Mariaelena Torres redirected a corner kick. An NJCU defender playing behind the goalie headed the ball away to thwart the threat.
The Cougars outshot the Gothic Knights (0-4-1), 16-6, while corner kick opportunities were even at three-all.
In the pivotal shootout period Kean's Gabi Triolo was up first and she was successful. Kim Brites missed wide for NJCU (1-0 after one round). The outcome switched in the second round leaving both teams tied (1-1). Joanna Spaulding put Kean up 2-1 after three rounds and the fourth round had both players (Naya Thompson and Victoria Gil) prove successful, putting the mark at 3-2. After a Kean miss to start the fifth round, Krysti Alejandro got a key marker for NJCU to knot things up in the shootout at three-all. Kayley Brooks found the back of the net for Kean in the sixth round and a miss high by the Gothic Knights sealed the advancement for Kean.
