Union, N.J. (5/1/21) – The Kean University baseball team was swept by visiting The College of New Jersey in the regular season finale for both on Saturday by the finals of 8-4 & 10-9.
Game One – TCNJ 8, Kean 4
The Lions (9-14, 8-10 NJAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings after a two-run homer from Ryan Goodall in the first frame and a sacrifice fly from Chris Reeder in the third.
The Cougars (15-12, 10-8 NJAC) tied things up in their half of the fourth as Chris Ciaccio and Conner DeForge each walked with the bases loaded while Frank LoGiudice collected an RBI fielder's choice.
TCNJ then took the lead for good in the seventh with a four spot. Joe Ockowski provided a two RBI single while Aydon Chavis lofted a two-run homerun for the 7-3 lead. Kean tacked on a single run in the eighth with an RBI groundout from Ciaccio. Goodall rounded out the scoring with a linedrive homerun in the top of the ninth.
Joseph Felipe earned his first win of the season after allowing just two hits in six innings. He walked seven and struck out four. Zach Gelo picked up the save with a three inning, one hit, one run performance.
Game Two – TCNJ 10, Kean 9
It was a see-saw affair in the nightcap with the teams trading leads or trying several times in the contest.
Tied at four-all in the seventh, the Lions took the lead with an RBI double from Chris Cote and they added one more with a sacrifice from Cameron Cane. Pinch-hitter Phil Marcantonio answered right back in the bottom of the same inning with a grand slam, his seventh homerun of the season, to put Kean back on top, 8-6.
The Cougars added would looked like insurance with a single run in the eighth with an RBI single from DeForge (9-6).
The Lions came out swinging in their last at-bat and Goodall again got things going with an RBI single and Avery Epstein capitalized with a three run homer, the fourth of the day for TCNJ, to put them back on top for good.
Kean finishes the season as the fifth seed in the NJAC and will head to #4 Montclair State University beginning next Friday for a best of three series in the first round of the NJAC Tournament.
