Kings Point, N.Y. (9/25/21) – The United States Merchant Marine Academy football team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 56-7 win over Kean University on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Mariners combined for 523 yards of total offense on the day (256 rushing, 267 passing). Quarterback Ian Blankenship accounted for six touchdowns (four passing and two rushing). He was 6-of-8 passing.
The USMMA defense forced five turnovers in the game as C.J. Mustain registered 3.5 sacks to go along with nine total tackles, one quarterback hurry and one pass breakup.
The Cougars (0-3) had 227 yards of total offense (214 in the air) as sophomore quarterback Justin Lucia finished 23-for-40. The Kean score came near the end of the first half as senior Myles Toppin hauled in a 15 yard pass with just 11 seconds on the clock.
Sophomore Donte Jamison hauled in a game-high nine catches for 136 yards with a long of 72 yards. Defensively, sophomore Raymond Gorny led all players on the afternoon with 11 tackles, including three for combined losses of 12 yards.
The Cougars open NJAC play next Saturday when they travel to Christopher Newport University.
