Stockton Pushes Past Women's Volleyball

Union, N.J. (9/28/21) – Stockton University's Charlotte Leon had a team-high 17 kills as the Ospreys topped the Kean University women's volleyball team, 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-27, 25-20) on Tuesday evening in NJAC action.

The Cougars (5-9, 2-2 NJAC) were led by Anne Beckemeyer who had 14 kills and a .407 hitting percentage to go along with five blocks.

It was a tight affair for most of the first set before the Cougars rolled off four straight points to push ahead (23-16).  Beckemeyer had two blocks in the stretch.

Stockton (6-11, 3-1 NJAC) then used a short four point burst of their own in the second set to turn the momentum in their direction (17-13).  Leon collected two kills in the span.  Kean battled back and came within one (20-19) but a well-placed timeout put the momentum back with the Ospreys who scored the next three points to provide enough cushion down the stretch.

It was a back-and-forth affair in the third set as extra time was needed to decide the go ahead set.  A Cougar attack error and an ace from Sophia Marziello sealed the 27-25 third set win for Stockton.

Kean sprinted out of the gate in the fourth set, taking a 5-1 lead and forcing Stockton to take an early timeout.  The Ospreys chipped away and tied things up at 10-all.  It was a lead changing battle for most of the set until two Cougar errors gave Stockton a slim 20-17 edge.  That was enough for Caity Ullmer who then recorded four kills for four of the final five points for Stockton to close out the win.

Ashley Smith and Kayla Thornton each had 11 kills for Kean while Taylor Micheaux had 10.

Kean returns to action on Saturday when they host Hunter College and SUNY New Paltz in a tri-match beginning at noon.
