Women's Hoops Sits Atop of the NJAC After Win Over NJCU

Jersey City, N.J. (1/28/23) – Sophomore Macy Seaman scored a career-high 25 points to help the Kean University women's basketball gain sole possession of first place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference standings with a 65-49 win over host New Jersey City University on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Cougars (12-8, 10-3) used an all-around effort in the first quarter with each of the starters recording points to push ahead to a six point lead after 10 minutes of action.

The Gothic Knights (9-9, 9-4 NJAC) battled back and tied things up at 20-all with free throws from NJAC leading scorer Damaris Rodriguez with two and a half minutes to go.  Seaman provided three buckets down the stretch to help give the Cougars an advantage heading into halftime, 26-22.

NJCU took the lead with 7:39 to go in the third quarter, but that would be the last as the Cougars surged with a 13-0 run fueled by two treys from Shannon McCoy.

The Knights got within six in the fourth quarter, but Kean again pushed out to a double-digit lead they would not relinquish down the stretch to break NJCU's seven game winning streak.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Seaman was 10-for-12 shooting while adding seven rebounds.  McCoy finished with 17 points and six rebounds while Kayla Anderson registered six points and 10 rebounds.  Brittany Graff recorded six points and five assists as Kean's winning streak pushed to six straight.

Rodriguez finished with a team-high 21 points for NJCU in the loss.

UP NEXT:

The Cougars return home for two tough matchups next week as they host TCNJ on Wednesday before the Profs visit on Saturday.
