Union, N.J. (10/7/23) – Montclair State University defeated the Kean University football team by the final of 27-14 on Saturday afternoon in NJAC action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Montclair scored first needing just one play in their third drive of the day. Starting at their own 20 yard line, Henry Lewis skirted around tackles and cut across the field for an 80 yard touchdown run.
The Red Hawk defense intercepted the Cougars on their next drive, setting up good field position for the offense. Lewis brought them inside the red zone, but the drive stalled and Montclair later took a 10-0 lead with a 28-yard field goal from Greg Casimir.
Montclair would go up by 17 early in the second quarter after Zach Lewis set them up with good field position with a 19 yard punt return. A Kean penalty pushed the Red Hawks into the red zone and two plays later Andrew Sanborn found Clarence Wilkins for an 18 yard strike.
Later in the quarter, the Cougars got on the board using a 12 play drive that took over five minutes off the clock. Alex Bryant hauled in a 15 yard reception from Robbie Nungesser to put Kean just outside the red zone. Later in the drive Bryant brought down a 13 yard reception just outside the endzone. Two quarterback sneaks later and the Cougars were on the board (17-7).
Halfway through the third quarter, the Red Hawks used a 10-play, 73 yard drive, capped by a 15 yard dash from Abellany Mendez to take a 24-7 lead.
Montclair closed out their scoring in the fourth quarter, using over eight minutes on the clock. Casimir knocked in a 27-yard field goal.
Kean scored one more touchdown on the afternoon in their next possession. The Cougars marched 86 yards, capped by another one yard plunge from Nungesser for what would be the final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Raymond Gorny had a team-best 11 tackles with one quarterback hurry. Tommie Lee Pierson, Robert Long Jr. and Chris Amos all recorded interceptions on the afternoon. Amos added a sack. JP Penick blocked a field goal attempt while adding four tackles
For Montclair, Nicholas Burgess had a game-high 12 tackles while Dimitri Pali had four tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Lewis led the offense with 176 rushing yards.
