Baseball Pushes Past Haverford, 9-5

Union, N.J. (2/23/23) – The Kean University baseball team made it six in a row with a 9-5 win over visiting Haverford College on day one of the Jack Nagy Classic on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Fords (0-1) pushed across an unearned run in the top of the first for their only lead of the day.  The Cougars (6-1) responded with a three spot in the bottom of the same inning as Kyle Adorno and Brett Hilsheimer both reached on singles.  Phil Marcantonio delivered the first homerun of the season for Kean with a three run blast down the line to take a lead the Cougars would not relinquish.

Each team kept chipping away with single runs in both the second and third innings.  Haverford closed the gap to one again with a single run in the top of the seventh (5-4) but Kean added cushion in the bottom of the eighth with a four run inning.  Tyler Stone worked a bases loaded walk and Steve Petrosh drove in two with a single.  Adorno rounded out the scoring with an RBI sacrifice.

The Fords made some noise in their last half inning, with one run already in and one out, Harry Genth worked a full count walk to load the bases.  Noah Rivera entered and was able to work out of the jam for his first save of the season as he got a flyout and groundball to end the threat.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Marcantonio was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Petrosh was 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.  Caleb Rodriguez finished with two hits and an RBI.

Nick Nemes (1-0) earned the win after tossing six innings allowing two earned runs and five hits.

For the Fords, Jack Wallis was 3-for-4 and Chuck Norton worked three walks in the loss.
