UNION, N.J. (2/23/23) – Eliza Filus finished 3-for-6 over two games as the Kean University softball team split a season opening doubleheader with Muhlenberg College on Thursday.
Kean 3 (1-0), Muhlenberg 1 (0-1)
- The Cougars tallied three runs on eight hits and two errors.
- The Mules tallied one run on eight hits and three errors.
- Kean led 2-0 going into the sixth after Andee Perseponko scored on a throwing error in the third and on a Karly Messina RBI groundout in the fifth.
- Muhlenberg got on the board in the sixth with an RBI double from Sophia Cicchetti.
- The Cougars added an insurance run in the sixth when Sydney Hixenbaugh scored on a defensive error.
- Filus finished 3-for-3 at the dish.
- Perseponko went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
- Hixenbaugh went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
- Hixenbaugh also struck out seven batters in the complete game victory.
- Kaya Mahy and Scooter Hulsen both notched two hits apiece for the Mules.
Muhlenberg 2 (1-1), Kean 1 (1-1)
- The Mules recorded two runs on five hits.
- The Cougars totaled one run on four hits and one error.
- Muhlenberg scored two runs on three hits in the first, including back to-back RBI's from Maddie Svenningsen and Ava Calabrese
- Kean only manufactured one run as Autaum Hilyer hit a looping base hit down the right field line to score Messina in the second.
- Hilyer along with Brianna Sciulli, Messina and Gianna Pickens all tallied one hit apiece for the Cougars.
- Annabella Marino struck out four batters in the complete game loss.
- Justine Bergara struck out two batters and went 1-for-2 at the plate for the Mules.
