ARLINGTON, Va. (4/11/23) – Luke Frankenfield notched a triple-double with 17 assists, 15 digs and 14 kills as the sixth seeded Kean University men's volleyball team fell short of an upset bid of third seeded Marymount University with a 3-2 Continental Volleyball Conference Quarterfinal loss on Tuesday evening.
Hayden Kerekes totaled 19 kills for the Saints who improve to 21-6 overall and advance to Friday's semifinal match against Juniata.
Rajheem Meulens totaled 16 kills and seven digs for the Cougars who finish their season at 14-15 overall.
First Set
- Kean won 27-25.
- The Cougars posted a .120 hitting percentage, while holding Marymount to a .057 percentage.
- Kean trailed by five before a 5-1 run tied the set at 17-17.
- The Saints lead 24-23, before committing three straight attacking errors to end the set.
- Meulens totaled four kills in the set victory.
Second Set
- Marymount won 25-22.
- The Saints hit .258, while Kean posted a .200 hitting percentage.
- The Cougars trailed by six, before rallying with an 8-2 run to take a 21-20 lead.
- Marymount closed with a 4-1 run, including back-to-back kills by Kerekes.
Third Set
- Marymount won 25-21.
- The Saints hit .302, while Kean posted another .200 hitting percentage.
- Marymount opened on a 13-4 run, before the Cougars rallied again with an 11-5 run to cut the lead down to 18-16.
- The Saints closed with three straight kills.
Fourth Set
- Kean won 25-18.
- The Cougars hit 111, while holding Marymount to a .043 percentage.
- Neither side held larger than a four-point lead before Kean closed with a 9-5 run.
- David Flores recorded three straight aces during the run.
- Meulens and Chris Mitchell notched three kills apiece.
Fifth Set
- Marymount won 15-13.
- Kean hit .250 compared to a .190 percentage for the Saints.
- The deciding set was extremely tight with eight ties and four lead changes.
- The Cougars held a 13-9 advantage, before the Saints closed out the match with four straight points.
